the narrator

I am only a little melancholic, a little bit sick of the world, but isn’t everyone like this?

If you feel that I am unfamiliar in a crowd, do not be surprised, that is not the real me

I am still the person you know from before.

I think I'm getting sick.

So what does one do when sickness beckons? Blog? Me thinks not. And yet my brain refuses to do anything else more productive. It also refuses to go to sleep - probably protesting against the abuse I handed it today.

I think it might be because of one of my subjects - Law, Democracy, and Citizenship - that I'm feeling like someone hit me with a sledgehammer in the head. Went to my professor's inaugural lecture as the Regius Chair of Public Law and the Law of Nature and Nations (whew, what a title) last night and listend for an hour to an incredibly dense lecture about 'law's coordinates of time and space' and the 'future of constitutional pluralism' which seemed to get both Vincent and Luke incredibly excited (because they're smart), but which left less of an impression on me than the rows of impressive-looking marble busts and portraits in the Playfair Library where the lecture was held. (Being mere students, we aren't normally allowed into this particular library. It's all wood-panelled and carpet-lined with leather volumes of books locked up in mahogany shelves. Only the cool and important people can go in, like some sort of secret club.)

After that was a wine reception at a room that was painted an INCREDIBLY BRIGHT SHADE OF RED. I've never seen any room that red before, and this seemed to get Vincent incredibly excited (because he's weird), but which only gave me a headache. So we stood around among other important dignitaries (law professors from Edinburgh, other British and American universities, some legal and political notables who ignored us) and I rather unwisely decided to drink 2 glasses of red wine on an empty stomach (because being one of the few people under the age of 40 is already kind of awkward and just standing there empty-handed is even more awkward). Then rushed off to my 2-hour long Japanese class famished and half-drunk (made even more uncool by the fact that I arrived late and walked into a roomful of staring people). Woo. Go me.

Fast forward to the next day - LDC class at 11am. I was really keen for this because for the 1st time in a long while I felt that I understood what I was reading. However, after sitting down I started thinking that the room is tilted on an angle - which is never a good sign - and then my brain shut down. Which is a pity, because it was an interesting discussion and I would've had more to contribute other than just nod my head in a reasonably wise-looking fashion. After class, went to the Black Medicine cafe (owned by JK Rowling's brother-in-law, by the way) with Vincent, Luke, and red-haired-girl-whose-name-I-don't-know (but should because I've known her for 2 months) and continued our discussion on legal theory and philosophy. In some ways, this has always been my dream - to sit in a chic cafe with a bunch of other students and debate about law, politics, and life. Unfortunately, I am far too unintelligent to contribute anything, so most of the time I just sit and listen to them fill up my head with incredibly brilliant and insightful but head-hurting ideas.

After 3 hours or so of intense discussion (with the staff giving us rather concerned looks) I finally took my leave while Luke and girl continued with their PhD-level insights (Vincent had already gone home to sleep haha). After dinner though, guess what I did? Instead of taking some medicine and going to bed early, I tortured myself by reading around 50 pages of material for my next LDC class, which is not even on until next week. WHICH. WAS. A. STUPID. THING. TO. DO. considering my physical and mental health. I have NO sense of survival apparently.

So of course now I'm feeling absolutely terrible, and have no one to blame for it other than myself. And well, perhaps my LDC class.

Actually, I'm just going to blame my LDC class.
DAMN YOU
